It’s wild to think about, but the kids we raise as Muslims today, may leave Islam tomorrow. Whether we’re in a Muslim environment or not, this could be the case. Of course it’s much more likely in a non-Muslim environment, with the pressure to conform and integrate, but it truly something that can happen anywhere. The Prophets own relatives didn’t follow Islam, such as Prophet Nuh, Prophet Ibrahim, and Prophet Lut. If the best of men couldn’t convince their own family members of the truth of Islam, then you and I shouldn’t be surprised if our family members choose to leave Islam.

نَّكَ لَا تَهْدِي مَنْ أَحْبَبْتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ اللَّـهَ يَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ
 Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

Quran: 28:56

Still we must do our best to guide our family, and one part of that is choosing a God fearing spouse. Although it is permissible for a Muslim man to marry a Christian or Jewish woman, it really isn’t the most sensible route. At the end of the day the mother is who spends the most time with the kids, and she has a huge impact on the upbringing of the kids. Osman, the son of Ali Kemal left Islam. The reasons are not clear, but what is known is that he was raised by his grandmother who was a non-Muslim. What’s also known is that he changed his last name to Johnson. This happened as a result of Ali Kemal marrying Winifred Brun. And now we have a Prime Minister who is so far from Islam, you would never have thought his own great grandfather was a Muslim.

The Prophet said: “A woman may be married for four things: Her wealth, her lineage, her beauty or for her religion. Choose the religious, may your hands be rubbed with dust (i.e., may you prosper).”
