“I’m Muslim, so I’m Safe”

“I’m Muslim, so I’m safe.”

Many of us may have these thoughts.

“So long as I believe, I’m a believer so I’m safe from the punishment of Allah.”

“Allah is most forgiving and most merciful.”

We may have these thoughts, but it doesn’t make them completely right. As wise Muslims we should be like a bird with two wings. One wing is reassured to the mercy of Allah, and the other is worried of Allah’s punishment as well. A bird with only one wing cannot fly.

What good is a slave who ignores the commands of his Master? It’s not enough to say, “I believe.”

Iman isn’t simply believing. It’s belief that pushes you to obey Allah’s command. The scholars have defined iman as words on the lips, belief in the heart, and actions by the body. It increases with acts of obedience to Allah and worship, while decreasing with acts of disobedience and sin.

So as believers we should do good as defined by Allah and His messenger, and avoid evil as defined by Allah and His messenger. We do so hopeful in Allah’s mercy and fearful of his punishment.

You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah. [3:110]

The reality is we live in a society where doing evil is easy. It is all around and nobody would stop us, or even judge us. Rather we would find people who would encourage and support us. But if we take part in that evil we are risking our whole lives for a little pleasure in this life. There is more than enough halaal activities that we can avoid the evil ones. But Shaytan makes the evil pleasing to our eyes we we find our hearts yearning for these evil things. And that’s part of the test of life.

 أَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ أَن يُتْرَكُوا أَن يَقُولُوا آمَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ
Do the people think that they will be left to say, “We believe” and they will not be tried? [29:2]

Truly the people in this world who are not Muslim are suffering. Outwardly they may look so happy, but inside they are crying and dying. So many of them commit suicide. They have all this wealth, and seemingly are having lots of fun, but then why are they committing suicide? Nearly 45,000 Americans die by suicide every year. Do you believe the narrative that it’s all mental illness?

As Muslims it’s no surprise. How can anyone be happy, when they don’t even know why they exist? They have no guidance. They follow Shaytan and their own desires. They would argue over what a man and a woman is. They would pollute the air and the sea, dooming future generations just to please themselves.

They would accuse people of being criminals for defending themselves, while they themselves are killing millions of innocents.

They would spend their weekends drowning in drugs and alcohol, so they could forget the previous week.

They would call a woman oppressed for being modest and choosing to cover, while their own Christian nuns are praised for their modesty.

So what’s wrong with us? Why do some of us choose to follow these misguided people? Why do we love them so much? They’re all show, but no substance. They’re the people of shirk. They’re destined for hellfire, so why would we follow them?

The Prophet PBUH said:

“You would follow the same path as was taken by those before you, inch by inch, and step by step, so much so that if they had entered into the hole of the lizard, you would enter too.”

He also said:

“Whoever imitates a people is of them.”

Allah says in Al-Quran:

لَّا تَجِدُ قَوْمًا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّـهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّـهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَوْ كَانُوا آبَاءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَانَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ
You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. [58:22]

We love our family and even our society, but not in their evil. We want good for them. The ultimate good would be their safety from the fire. So supporting them in their evil beliefs or evil goals would be opposite of the core belief of Islam.

Would you support your parents’ killer? Would you want to follow their ways and imitate their behavior? You never would. Shirk is worse than killing.

وَالْفِتْنَةُ أَشَدُّ مِنَ الْقَتْلِ
and fitnah (shirk) is worse than killing

Muslims are not people who follow blindly without thought. We think deeply about our actions and intentions. May Allah guide us towards beneficial knowledge, so we can make smart decisions, which lead us to a good end.

  1. Aawe…

The girl looks like a Muslim…but what about the boy? No one can tell if he is a Muslim or not….he should be wearing some clothing showing he is a Muslim.

    1. Thank you. I value your input. Muslim clothing for a boy is essentially covering your awrah and dressing modestly. The thobe is cultural, and I believe the kuffi is as well. So I’m not sure what would qualify as distinctly Muslim clothing, except clothing that said, “I love Islam” or something similar. Maybe you can suggest something insha Allah.
