Sometimes it feels like you’re standing still. Like you’re not improving at all. As a person, in your career, in your life and so on. It’s at times like this that we should take a step back and look at where we were before, and where we are now. I think in most cases we will see that we are actually improving, but we just didn’t notice it.
It’s so easy to become depressed and to give up sometimes. And being sad is fine, but being depressed is not acceptable. Look at all the favors Allah has given you! Sight. Hearing. Taste. Family. Friends. A home. And much much more. Allah says in the Quran:
وَإِن تَعُدُّوا نِعْمَتَ اللَّـهِ لَا تُحْصُوهَا ۗإِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَظَلُومٌ كَفَّارٌ
And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful. (14:34)
It’s so true isn’t it? People even take their own lives due to a small loss. Some may argue it’s a medical condition, but the fact is suicide is much higher in 1st world countries than in 3rd world countries. If it was simply due to genes, then it would be much more even. The people with generally more, are ungrateful, and the people with generally less are much more grateful. The kindest people are sometimes the poorest, or at least used to be poor. Here’s an amazing book about overcoming sadness: Don’t be Sad
So no matter what your problems are. No matter what you face. Just think of all the things you are blessed to have. Make a list and count them. Then thank your Lord for His generosity and compassion.
May Allah forgive us for our shortcomings, and heal us from the sickness within our hearts. Ameen.
